Chemicals & Gases

Material for Protection Against Aggressive Media

The integrated ContiBarrierSystem offers protection against toxins, chemicals and gases. Hazardous substances such as chlorine, chlorinated hydrocarbons and ammonia are unable to penetrate the barrier layer. A high resistance to acids and lyes, together with excellent tear resistance, guarantees the highest possible level of safety. At the same time, the material is around 30% lighter and therefore much thinner and more flexible than previous materials.

Safer, more comfortable and better value for money: These are the key benefits offered by the newly developed protective clothing material incorporating the ContiBarrierSystem®

When used in chemical protection suits, the new material design offers far greater protection against chemicals and gases. Hazardous substances such as chlorine, chlorinated hydrocarbons and ammonia are unable to penetrate the barrier layer. A high resistance to acids, lyes and aggressive chemicals, together with an excellent tear resistance, guarantees the greatest possible safety for the wearer.

At the same time, at 450 g/m2, the material is around 30% lighter when compared with the usual 700 g/m2 and is therefore much thinner and more flexible than previous materials. This doesn't just make it easier and more economical to work with and process the material; it also increases comfort for the wearer, meaning they can now move more easily and wear it for longer periods of time.

Protective clothing from Continental also conforms to U.S. fire safety standards (NFPA).

A mere 0.30 to 0.40 mm thick, the new protective clothing material is made up of ten different layers. The inner and outer layers are manufactured from elastomers. Depending on the customer’s requirements and area of application, different elastomers (fluorocarbon, chlorinated sulfonate polyethylene, butyl rubber) can be used for both the inner and outer layers.

The fabric reinforcement materials can also be varied to meet individual requirements. Two polymer layers have been integrated, independently of one another, into the protective clothing material by means of special adhesive layers. These make it possible to achieve an exceptionally high level of impermeability and optimum safety, even if one of the barrier layers is destroyed or damaged.
