There have been significant technical advancements in steel cord belt splicing over the past few years. Continental’s Preform splices provide improved splice efficiency, along with reduced splice time and improved performance. This means more cash in your pocket.

Conventional splice methods involve the use of cements and rubber noodles. Cement drying time extends the overall splicing time, thereby increasing the risk of contamination.

The alternative – the laying of cord and noodle, further extends splice time, as constant checking of the chalk line and adjustments to the noodle width are necessary to maintain cord alignment. Cord misalignment and contamination are critical factors for the performance of the resulting splice.

Preform™ splice methods

Preform splice technology from Continental. A conveyor belt revolution. As the name implies, Preform is a pre-grooved form that simplifies splicing by allowing you to "sandwich" the cables coming from either side between the formed rubber. Not only is the process of spacing made easier, but the belt itself is made stronger. Preform technology makes splicing simpler and less time-consuming.

  1. Position the bottom Preform panel on the bottom.
  2. Position the stripped cords forming the belt.
  3. Position the top Preform panel on top.

Preform splices utilize preformed, multi-grooved top and bottom cover panels, which eliminates the need for cements and noodles. Cement drying times are eliminated, which reduces the possibility of splice contamination as a result of dust infiltration. Cord laying time is significantly reduced, and the correct cord spacing and alignment is virtually guaranteed. The result is a stronger splice, with improved performance and a longer service life.

The above cross-sectional view illustrates the Preform concept and is not representative of an actual splice. This illustration shows how the top and bottom multi-groove panels encase each cord, eliminating the need for noodles and ensuring cord alignment. In an actual splice, cords would lead in from both ends of the belt, and the cord ends would not be wrapped as shown.

Improved performance

Testing on the 2-pulley dynamic splice tester at the Continental technical center in Marysville, Ohio, shows the results of two identical belts, one spliced using Preform, and one spliced using conventional splicing methods. This one test shows that the Preform splice is able to withstand 33% more load cycles, which, in theory, equates to an increase in service life of 33% when compared with the conventional splice. Static pull splice strength tests conducted at an independent laboratory showed the Preform splice to be at least 10% stronger than a conventional splice.

Improved performance


Continental Preform splices have been performed successfully in many countries around the world. On the basis of the actual measurements taken when comparing one splice technique with the other on the same belt and at the same time, savings of 16% to 25% were achieved. Reduced splicing time means more up time and increased productivity.
